Princess Tessy's Ride Into Peril

Chapter Five - An Even Worse Day

The first thing Tessy saw that morning when she awoke was her lovely gown crisscrossed by the hard brown rope that held her prisoner. Her whole body ached from being bound so tightly and she tried to move her hands but they throbbed with pain from being tied so tight behind her. She wiggled her fingers and ran the tips against the bark of the tree to make sure that they had circulation. It was poor circulation but it was there. She tried to cry out to get Skar’s attention but could only manage a muffled moan. Skar heard her anyway as he and the Bandits awakened and came to her with a mirthless grin.

"Well good morning to you Your Royal Highness! No sense in giving me those doe eyed looks my dear. You were a very naughty girl last night so no breakfast for you!" He said mockingly. "No water either. I’m a nice guy when I want to be but I don’t like being taken advantage of! So you can just stay like that until we get our ransom! And then we’ll deal with you!"

Deal with you?, thought Tessy. What could that mean? Surely they would keep their word and release her like they said once they got the ransom. Some of the men were feeding Alabaster and petting her and she strained to hear what they were saying.

"A fine horse he is. Bring a handsome price he will!"

Were they planning to sell Alabaster? How would she return to the castle? Maybe they’d give her one of their own mounts, she thought, or maybe.....

Maybe they weren’t going to release her at all! She had heard of women being taken away and sold to pirates who in turn took them overseas and sold them to slave markets! Would this be her fate? A thrill of terror came over her at the thought. Would she ever see Happy World again? Would she ever hold her hugfriends in her arms and feel their warmth against her? What was to become of her?

She would find out sooner than she planned, for one of Skar’s men returned from the Dragon Hill, where he was ordered to scout around and wait for the ransom to be delivered.

"They brung it Skar! Clear as day itself. Four Mules nearly staggering under the weight of the gold they carry. And a fifth one! Loaded with diamonds, emeralds rubies! Oh it’s a sight to see it is!"

"Was their anybody there? Did they have anybody around them?"

"No sir! Just the mules. They followed your orders to a T."

"Ahh, honest men make our job so much easier." Said Skar with a laugh. Then, turning to the captive Princess, he said. "Well Your Highness, we will soon come to the parting of the ways." And with that he untied the rope securing her to the tree and holding her legs to the stake but kept the rest of her body tied up.

"The tricky thing about kidnapping is that once your hostage is released, they have a tendency to go to whatever authorities they can find and give them the descriptions of their captors. Then these authorities tend to arrest said captors which results in a bunch of perfectly respectable bandits either getting hanged or spending long times lock up in prison." While saying this he lifted his terrified captive in his arms and carried her to Alabaster. "Now this horse we could sell, no problem. But you! You are far too famous. If we tried to sell you to the pirates somebody would recognize you and report it." He laid her face down on Alabaster’s saddle, in a most undignified position and tied her in place.

"Now, if you were a man, I’d slit yer throat and leave you for the buzzards! But I can’t do that to a lady. I’ve never slain a lady in my life, you see, respect for my mother you know!"

Tessy had only a moment to wonder what Skar’s mother thought of his being in this particular line of work before he continued. All of the Bandits were mounted and ready to ride out.

"But as a special treat, I’m going to take you up in the hills to see a very dear friend of mine." Taking Alabaster’s reins, he led him to his own horse and mounted. "I’ll give you one last ride with your precious horsy, Princess and then it’s fare thee well." And with that he gave the order to move out and led the men and their securely bound and hopeless captive to face an uncertain fate.

The ride was short but rough and rocky. In her horrible uncomfortable position, Tessy saw the poor mules trembling under the weight of their burdens and wished there was something she could do for them, but she could do nothing for herself let alone mules. The thought that this was the last she would see of Alabaster or Mr. Bear or Mrs. Bear or any of her beloved citizens of Happy World was more than she could bear. Whatever her fate she prayed that they wouldn’t be too unhappy and that they would remember her well and know that she loved them all dearly.

The mules faded from sight as they came to the tricky mountain pass. The Bandits dismounted. Skar cut Tessy loose from Alabaster and carried her over his shoulder up the pass. Tessy said a silent farewell and felt heartsick at the sadness she saw in her dear horse’s eyes. She hoped his new owner would love him as much as she did.

Tessy’s captors finally carried her to a canyon where a stout blackened wooden steak stood alone among the rocky terrain. Unloading his burden carefully from his shoulder, Skar and his men stood Tessy up against the stake and, as if she wasn’t bound enough already, tied her to the stake with another long length of rope.

"It’s a ferocious fire breathing dragon that lives here!" Said Skar at last. "You might think he’s a legend but he’s real all right! All I have to do is blow that horn." He pointed to an old weather beaten horn. "And that will awaken him. And he always wakes up hungry. And what could satisfy a hungry dragon more than a fair Princess?" he said with a laugh that spread throughout the assembled throng. "And so I bid you farewell" he said bowing with mock courtesy as the men filed down the pass. Skar stopped only long enough to blow a long and mournful note on the horn before he hurried after his men. Princess Tessy was left alone to face the dragon she heard stirring from the cave above her. She renewed he resolution to face the end with dignity and courage.
